A residence permit enables foreign nationals to enter and reside in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia and serves as the foundation for a smooth start to living and working in the country.
In Slovenia, foreign nationals may obtain a temporary residence permit, a permanent residence permit, or long-term EU resident status. A temporary residence permit is always issued for a specific purpose, namely for:
- employment or work,
- family reunification,
- study, education, professional training, practical training, specialization, or participation in international student exchange programs,
- performing voluntary work and participating in volunteer service projects within European Union programs,
- other justified reasons based on law, international instruments, international principles and customs, or in the interest of the Republic of Slovenia.
Administrative practice recognizes a foreign national’s ownership of, or long-term lease over, residential real estate as an “other justified reason.”
Special benefits apply to foreign nationals of Slovenian descent up to the second generation, who may obtain a temporary residence permit without the need to demonstrate a specific purpose. The same applies to digital nomads who wish to live and work in Slovenia in a flexible and lawful manner.
